Soma may be the title to the moon, the son in-law of Daksha. Once Soma disobeyed a specific instruction of his father-in-law. Daksha was so angry that he cursed him, stating, "Thou shalt wane!" The moon, who used to shine in full splendor every evening until then, began to shrink.
However, prior to the curse introduced about an absolute finish to the moon, several a god requested Daksha to revoke his curse.
Daksha questioned Soma to have a bath in the sea in the mouth with the river Saraswati and then to pray to Lord Shiva. Hence at Prabhasa, Shiva came to become identified as Somanath, the Lord from the moon.
