Bhai-Dooj Festival

Right after the celebrations of Diwali-there arrives the festival of lights - firecrackers and sweets, sisters in India get ready for 'Bhai Dooj'. The festival falls about the second day soon after Diwali and is also celebrated all over the nation.

Bhai Dooj or Bhaiyadooj will be the festival of brother and sister, exactly where sisters ceremonize their adore for his or her brothers by putting an auspicious tilak or a vermilion mark about the forehead of their brothers and performs an aarti of him by displaying him the light with the holy flame as being a mark of love and defense from evil forces. They beautify a puja plate with chandan paste (sandal wooden), kajal, morning dew, green grass and paddy seeds or dhan along with sweets, roli, rice and coconut. Sister's observes fast till they place tilak on their brother's forehead. That day in addition they lay a lavish cuisine, all their brothers' preferred dishes.

Alternatively brothers also eagerly watch for this occussion. Brothers sit on a carpet and sisters lit puja lamp, uttering the mantra, use tilak of chandan/roli on the forehead, kajal and dew h2o with their little finger of left hand and give blessings with green grass and paddy seeds (dhan and durba). Lastly they offerers sweets together with the coconut to their brother. Therefore sisters want their brothers lengthy life, very good wellness and all prosperity.

¤ The Legend Related
Based on one legend, on this day, Lord Krishna, right after assassinating the Narakasura demon, goes to his sister Subhadra who welcomes him using the lamp, flowers and sweets, and mark his forehead with holy protective spot.
