The 29 Ajanta caves had been developed as secluded retreats with the Buddhist monks, who taught and performed rituals inside the Chaityas and Viharas, the historic seats of learning, and nerve - centers of the Buddhist cultural movement. Employing simple equipment like hammer and chisel, the monks carved out the amazing figures adorning the partitions of these constructions.

The Ellora caves, 34 in amount, are carved into the sides of a basaltic hill, 30 kms from Aurangabad. The finest specimens of cave - temple architecture, they house elaborate facades and exquisitely adorned interiors.

These constructions representing the 3 faiths of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, were carved throughout the 350 Ad to 700 Ad period of time. The twelve caves towards the south are Buddhist, the 17 within the centre dedicated to Hinduism, as well as the 5 caves to the north are Jain.

The sculpture within the Buddhist caves properly convey the nobility, grace and serenity inherent within the Buddha. Caves six and ten home photos through the Buddhist and Hindu faith, below the same roof, the latter devoted to Vishwakarma, the patron saint of Indian craftsmen.
